Exercise or Diet ?
Facebook Q: 03 August at 10:49
Pete, I'm in desperate need to loose a lot of weight and get rid of the big belly ........... running machine or cross trainer ? What do you reckon ?

Alcohol, Fine foods.....
:¬)
Gotta start with the reasons you put on the weight first. No point trying to exercise off weight if you're consuming the same as you burn up on the machine and them some more. Just by sorting out your diet and drinking will start the weight loss quest, and once it starts heading in the right direction you'll have more energy and motivation to carry on the good work. To start with just making time for a 30 minute "brisk" walk every morning will be as much as I would suggest. That way you make it part of your routine. Your dogs would enjoy it too and give you a great incentive to get out every day even when the weathers completely shit. WaterProofs and wellies.
:¬))
You need a reason to lose weight. Often a health concern has a good way of tweaking you into action.
Have a word with the buyer of food. If it's not in the house, if you're like me, you'll not be arsed to go out and get bad stuff, you just go without and so the weight starts dropping.
Bottle of wine once a week also works for us. If it's in the house we'll drink it whatever day it is.... no wine, no consumption of pointless/useless calories.
There's a few ideas to start. If you're dead set on an item to "exercise" on then I generally suggest a rower or elliptical trainer as they work the body to a greater degree. Rower is best but elliptical can be good if you plant it in front of the TV.
Hope that helps a little.
Cheers
Pete

Yep you got it - far too much of both. But have now started a regime of no alcohol during the week and only one night per weekend (not too much either).
Started eating healthy salads and cutting down on the portions and feeling better already :¬) But I feel like doing a bit of exercise to "hurry things up a tad", I've got a Concept2 rowing machine so had better start using it I guess !
Reason to lose weight is basically that I'm fed up of having a belly ! I realise it's going to be tough but I'm prepared to do something about it as long as it's at home ;¬) - I do walk the dogs every day without fail for about 30 minutes and much longer on the weekends, I guess I could start jogging with them ?
I know what you mean about "if it's not in the house then you'll go without ............." I can't be arsed to go to costcutter for snacks these days !
Thanks for the advice Pete

No problem *****.
Sounds like you have everything sorted already. You were just looking for something else to speed things up.
:¬)
Pick up the pace with the dogs a bit if their little legs can keep up.
Dogs are happier doing a fast trot and it takes away the distraction of smells. They don't do 2 things at once it's either trotting or sniffing.
Get on your concept for 20 minutes at the opposite end of the day to the walkies.
I find getting on the machine in the evening (while Deb & Son are away for the week) stops the sitting down and snacking.
Don't go too radical on the "diet" best off keeping fairly high protein (from chicken and fish including "oily" fish like salmon, mackerel etc)
Cut right back on what I call "pointless carbohydrates" like potatoes and take it easy with the pasta.
High fibre foods/wholemeal foods reduce the insulin response/release and help keep you feeling fuller for longer.
The beauty of having a crap diet and more weight to lose is you get a much quicker response when you clean everything up.
Set a time/distance goal on the concept and try and at least equal what you did the day before and if you better it that becomes your new target to at least equal from there on.
Your clothes will be falling off you before you know it.
:¬)
If you hit a sticking point or need any more tips just fire away, but you should be making progress almost on a daily basis. A couple of lb a week is plenty enough weight loss. It WILL go through plateaus where one week you won't lose anything but just stick with it and everything starts moving the following week.
DON'T start "dropping" meals. you need to eat regularly to keep your metabolism ticking over. You can actually lose weight by consuming MORE calories i.e. eating an apple here and there between meals rather than not eating breakfast etc.
Think that's a full diet/exercise consultation. Everything you need to know. No hidden secrets. Though strong stimulants can help both suppress appetite and give your exercise/walk etc a real boost as long as you don't rely on them on a daily basis as your body soon adapts to them, so save them for the days you really need a boost.
Stick with the plan and set a goal/image in your mind of what you WILL look like not what you hope to achieve. Keep that image and reflect on it daily, hourly even. It's yours if you visualise it and be it. If it's just a desire or a hope then you'll fail.
